Pinak From Pune Says: "Just before Ranikhet a lovely place”
A wonderful place to visit to feel the calmness of mind. Binsar Mahadev Mandir is in the middle of dense plantation. Lord Shankar, Lord Dattatrya, Laxmi-Narayan etc are the idols in the temple. But apart from the idols the place itself is the reason to be there. Stay for a while, don't be in a hurry to leave the place...

Wow feeling when I first reached at Binsar. Located very near to the Ranikhet, this temple is an ideal place to visit if you are on the Uttarakhand tour. This temple is full with deep silence and peace. A best place for doing the yoga and meditation. This temple is best known for the Binsar fair locally known as Binsar Kotik. This temple is very near to the village Soni and one can reach there by taking private jeep from Ranikhet.

The Legends

According to legends, in the nearby village the Manihar’s (Glass blowers) family used to live and spending their life. They send their pets (Cows & Goats) to the nearby jungle of Binsar to graze. There was a milch cow in that group but whenever she came back to her owner he found that there is no milk when he try to fetch milk from her. One day the cow’s owner followed the cow in the jungle and found that the cow is spreading her milk over a rock, and the rock is drinking all the milk. After seeing this the manihar filled with anger! He pushed the cow and hit the rock with the back portion of his ax. The torrent of blood started flowing from the rock. He take his cow back to home. That night a Baba come in the dream of the manihar and asked him to leave the place and take all manihars with him else he will destroy them. Soon they left the village and started earning their livelihood at Ramnagar.

After some time, in Kiroli village near Soni village a monk come to the dream of a 65 years old man who don’t have any children, and said “In the bank of Kunj River there is a Shivalinga in a bush. Find it and construct a temple for it.”

After receiving the order he find out the Shivalinga and build a temple and soon he was blessed with a son. Before 1959, there was a small temple in this location. In 1959 Naga Baba Shri Baba Mohan Giri, who was associated with Shri Punch Dashnam Juna Akhada, leaded the restoration of the temple. In this temple eternal flame is burning since 1970. In this temple, Shri Shankar Sharan Giri Sanskrit Vidyapeeth is also established.

In the sanctum of the Temple the statue of Ganesha, Hargauri and Maheshmardini are established.

The printed Nagri Script on the Maheshmardini Statue shows it belongs to 9th century. Apart from it’s beauty and peaceful environment this place is famous for its Baikunth Chaturdashi Fair. Every year in the month of June on the occasion of Baikunth Chaturdashi a fair is organised at this temple. In this fair women holds Diyas in their hand whole night for the wish of Child.
